When the stage is set for coercion, an abuser can exercise control across any of nine domains: personal activities and/or appearance; support, social life, and/or family; household; work, economic, and/or resources; health; intimate relationships; legal; immigration; and children.

Isolation prevents women from disclosing their partner’s behavior and from seeking help or support. Isolation also instills dependence in women and ensures that all of their skills and resources remain available only to their partners. Coercively controlling men micromanage their partners’ everyday lives, controlling access to necessities like food, money, sleep, housing, transportation, necessary medical care, and communication. ”19 Ultimately, coercively controlling men seek to deprive women of their freedom and their potential for action, ensuring that they remain entrapped in the relationship.
