DIDS removes these limitations and incorporates VTs mechanisms and PSM in its libraries. Chandrasekaran proposes a model of design based solely on the concept of generic tasks (Chandrasekaran 1986, 1990). Generic tasks decompose design tasks hierarchically. Each task is defined by its position in the hierarchy, the method used to perform it, and the knowledge, both declarative and control, required to perform the task. Generic tasks have three principal weaknesses, which are shared with DIDS, but to a lesser degree.
